The country is picturesque and undulating, surrounded by rolling hills and lush vineyards. The region has reliable summer weather with cool nights, which make for longer and slower ripening than other areas. The rich volcanic soils with quartz produce wines of great depth and character.
Viticulture was established in the area in 1858 by German vignerons including the Roth, Kurtz & Bucholtz families. Australia’s Chardonnay had its beginnings in the Kurtz’ Eurunderee vineyard. A French vine expert with the CSIRO identified the virus free grape as Chardonnay. As the popularity of the variety grew, this block became the source block for much of Australia’s Chardonnay.
Mudgee is one of the fastest growing premium wine producing regions of Australia. Wines from Mudgee are at the forefront of Australian and international competition. Reds in particular have achieved an outstanding reputation.
Plantings have now reached to 4500 ha under vine, which is roughly double the amount of vines planted in the Hunter Valley!
